Animal Flower Cave
The Animal Flower Cave is located under the cliffs at Northern most point of Barbados, it is the island's lone accessible sea cave. Discovered in the 1700’s by two British explorers who spotted the cave entrance from the sea, the cave itself stands six feet above the high water mark although it was formed at sea level. This natural wonder occurred because Barbados rises at roughly an inch every one thousand years.
In 1912 steps were carved into the cave using the path of an old blowhole, inside the cave visitors can observe sea anemones which are locals of Barbados call animal flowers. These ‘animal flowers’ are the reason for the cave being know as it is today. There is also a natural cave pool which visitors can swim in and look out and see the rocky coast line that the north of Barbados is known for.
Each tour is guided and last roughly 25 – 45 minutes depending on how long you decide to swim.
There is also a restaurant and bar onsite selling many Barbadian dishes and before you leave make sure to check out the locally made art, clothing and jewellery at the various vendors.
*Please note that the cave may be closed for safety reasons if the weather and sea are to rough*
